Twenty-two members of the Midshipmen Action Group recently assisted the Goshen Farm Preservation Society Inc. and the Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service with three projects at Goshen Farm Sharing Garden.

“Work day at the farm” involved a blend of educational workshops and just plain hard work.

MAG is a midshipmen-managed community service organization that coordinates numerous projects in the Annapolis area and nationwide.

Miriam Stanicic, the Naval Academy community relations officer, coordinated those midshipmen who gave their time, talent and energy with a variety of educational, environmental and social service activities.

One group of mids erected a safety fence around a huge soil health pit designed to show the various soil layers that have built up over the centuries. The pit was erected by 11 MAG members last November. The mids also sowed seeds of native perennials on the surrounding soil berm.

A second group cleared an area of a trees and vines outside the sharing garden fence, where a a high tunnel greenhouse will be placed.

A third group of midshipmen began the moving of the sharing garden fence and the clearing of ground for four new plots.

A fourth group operated geophysical equipment and received hands-on instruction in the mechanics of GIS and radar imaging.

These future leaders had every right to sleep in on their day off but chose to use their own liberty time to help and interact with community members.

The GFPS board of directors appreciates the enthusiasm, the positive attitudes and the speed with which the MAG accomplished the three projects. These efforts have enhanced the historic Goshen Farm buildings and property.

Many thanks to the NCRS personnel for their efforts, the GIS and radar imaging workshop instructors, and to the Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District for providing on-site support.
